In addition to a goodwill offering that supports future concerts, the choir is donating a portion of their proceeds to support a local charity. This reflects a history of charitable giving associated with Handel’s oratorio. When first performed in Dublin in 1742, this original “Messiah” was written exclusively to support three charities: “..for the relief of the Prisoners in several Gaols, and for the support of Mercer’s Hospital in Stephen Street, and of the Charitable Infirmary on the Inn’s Quay.”
This year, a portion of the proceeds from the concert will support The Carying Place. The mission of The Carying Place is to teach homeless, working families with children life skills for independent living while providing short-term housing and support. www.thecaryingplace.org |
